The surprising investment that beat 94% of the S&P 500

In just 604 days, a $10,000 investment in a securitized offering from Masterworks would have secured a $4,900 profit. That's a 27.3% net annualized return – better than 470 of the world's 500 largest stocks over the same time period. (Nov 2020 to July 2022)

And although not all artworks see those gains, it's not the first time art prices rose quicker than stocks. In fact, over the last 26 years, contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 131%.

It's also not the first time Masterworks has delivered impressive results for investors.

Because every single one of Masterworks 13 exits have been profitable so far, with 8 of those securing 20% net annualized returns or better.

Even better, over $10 trillion is expected to pour into alternative assets as a whole like art over the next few years, which means Masterworks is sitting at the heart of a major market megatrend.

Alexa’s LLM

During Amazon’s most recent earnings report, CEO Andy Jassy confirmed that Amazon will be joining the AI arms race by incorporating a large language model (LLM) to enhance the capabilities of its voice-activated assistant, Alexa.

If you’re not much of a computer whiz, a large language model is a technology that powers the red-hot AI assistant ChatGPT. If you are a computer whiz then you’ll be quick to point out that Alexa already has her own LLM. So… how will this be any different?

Well, now that ChatGPT has stretched the boundaries of what AI is capable of, Amazon plans to revisit Alexa to make her model more “general and capable.”

What's New

The biggest emphasis for Jassy & Co. is to make Alexa, more “conversational and proactive”. Amazon’s management didn’t provide a roadmap for when the new tech will be delivered. But, they offered a little bit of insight into what the final product will look like.

According to Jassy, with her new LLM, Alexa will be able to “Understand complex entertainment requests, context on content, and offer more accurate, personalized searches across both audio and video.” The main takeaway is that Amazon’s management wants Alexa to go even further to offer robust search results, even for vague queries.

For example, if you were to ask Old Alexa to recommend a movie to watch then she’d probably just pull up a list of the most popular trending titles. Not bad. But, not exactly over-the-top helpful.

On the other hand, to help you find a movie, New Alexa will be able to quickly scan your viewing history, provide a recommendation, and offer some insight on what it’s about and why you might like it. On top of that, she’ll work with you to fine-tune the request by answering follow-up queries like “I want to watch something scary”, “who’s in that movie”, or “Where can I stream it?”

Building The Best

For years, Amazon has been committed to building the world’s best personal assistant. Since Alexa has over 100 million installed endpoints, it’s easy to say that they have. But, for all the tech and innovation that makes Alexa so impressive, there are still shortcomings.

That said, updating her algorithm to mirror a ChatGPT-level of functionality could be exactly what Amazon needs to hit a tipping point and finally go parabolic with Alexa.
