Amazon Lags, But Maybe Not for Long

Generative AI platforms – like OpenAI’s ChatGPT – have taken the world by storm over the past few months.

Generative AI has set itself apart from similar technologies by its ability to create human-like responses to queries. This allows it to not only answer people’s questions, but also offer elaborate responses that include advice, tips, and recommendations. It can also even take on requests like writing essays, typing code, planning a trip, and much more.

So far the generative AI space has been dominated by ChatGPT, the child of Microsoft and OpenAI. Google, with its AI chatbot Bard, and Meta Platforms have also made waves in the industry.

However, while Amazon has announced a $100m Generative AI Innovation Center for AWS, the eCommerce giant has been fairly quiet about consumer-facing plans for generative AI…until now.

Alexa’s Advantage

For the first time, Amazon Senior VP of Devices and Services Dave Limp hinted that generative AI is in the works for Alexa. In fact, Alexa actually has a major advantage over other generative AI applications.

This advantage is that the devices that power Alexa, like the Amazon Echo, have multiple sensors, cameras, and microphones. This can add context to generative AI queries and could even allow for additional functionality that web-based platforms couldn’t handle.

While other generative AI tools are confined to a desktop or smartphone, Alexa is linked to other home systems like Ring doorbells, the Eero home network, and many other smart devices. This could expand the functionality of what generative AI is capable of while also drastically increasing Alexa’s helpfulness.

For example, instead of simply having Alexa turn your lights on and off, she could handle requests like “Hey Alexa, I’m going on vacation for a week. Please turn on all security systems and make sure that we aren’t using more electricity than normal while I’m gone.”

Doing it Right

While the prospect of an AI-infused Alexa is certainly exciting, there are a few reasons why Amazon is in no rush to bring a product to market.

First, it’s hard. Using generative AI to answer questions requires significantly more computing power. And, since Alexa powers roughly half a billion devices, rolling out an upgrade is no mean feat.

Additionally, Amazon’s management realizes that there are risks associated with the technology and is taking the time necessary to ensure that it’s done the right way. Amazon wants to incorporate AI into Alexa and make sure that it’s both noticeably more helpful as well as safe. While generative AI is amazing technology, it has been known to hallucinate answers from time to time, and – since Alexa acts as the main hub of many smart homes – having her “make up” a request could have disastrous consequences.

While Amazon has been fairly slow to throw its hat into the generative AI ring, you can rest assured that CEO Andy Jassy & Co have lofty aspirations when it comes to an AI-infused Alexa.
