Getting Smart With Ikea

Ikea just announced that two of its smart blind products, the Fyrtur and Kadrilj, will be getting a makeover starting next year. These smart blinds act just like regular window blinds except that they can be raised or lowered using your preferred smart device. This means that when youā€™re trying to get your afternoon nap in, but the sun is in your eyes, you can just holler at Alexa to lower your curtains.

Updated versions of the Fyrtur and Kadrilj, are expected to retail for $120 and $90 respectively. However, these products have not been officially released yet so weā€™ll have to wait and see how much Ikea decides to charge.

Surprisingly Smart

When it comes to shopping for products to enhance your smart home, many people prefer to start at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and, of course, Amazon. However, while Ikea is typically known for its DIY furniture, itā€™s got a surprisingly deep roster of smart home gadgets.

A few of Ikeaā€™s many smart home gadgets include a smart home hub (the Dirigera), a smart air quality sensor (the Vindstryka), and its range of smart speakers which have been installed in lamps, shelves, picture frames, and more.

An interesting feature of Ikeaā€™s Dirigera is the ability to create ā€œscenesā€ within the smart hub. A ā€œsceneā€ is what Ikea calls the ability to simultaneously control sound, lighting, air purification, and blinds across your smart home.

For example, you could set a scene so that every morning at 8 am, your Dirigera will open your blinds, slowly turn on the lights, and start playing soft music to help get your day started. Or, you could do the opposite at nighttime so that your Dirigera lowers the blinds and slowly dims the lighting.

Working Together

Whatā€™s even better is that the Dirigera will eventually be compatible with all of your products from Amazon, Google, Apple, Samsung, and other brands. This is because this Swedish smart home hub will be Matter certified, meaning that it has been built to follow specific protocols which make it compatible with other companiesā€™ smart home products. This should apply to all of Ikeaā€™s smart home products but weā€™d recommend double-checking before making a purchase.

As your portfolio of smart home products grows, youā€™ll definitely want to keep an eye on Ikea to see what else this Swedish giant comes up with.
