Apple Throws Its Hat In The Smart Home Ring

VoiceBrew is the #1 newsletter for Alexa and Google Assistant enthusiasts

🌎 Good afternoon and Happy Thursday! This Saturday is Data Privacy Day. Here are all the data privacy rules sweeping across the globe. PS: they're getting stricter.

🪟 By the way, if you haven't already, be sure to check out today's sponsor RYSE, the first retrofit solution to motorize and automate installed window blinds and shades, all controlled by a smartphone app.

RYSE and Shine

Want to invest in the next big brand name in your home and get in on the ground floor of an innovative technology company?

RYSE is the first retrofit solution to motorize and automate installed window blinds and shades, all controlled by a smartphone app.

It’s no surprise that RYSE has attracted top investors. Here’s why they like it:

  • Incredible historical returns: early investors have seen their shares 10x

  • $5 million in lifetime revenues with over 35,000 units sold.

  • 5 defensible patents lock in RYSE position in the growing market

  • SmartShade market is growing 55% annually with a $158 billion TAM

Even better, smart home technologies are getting bid up in the private markets. Google Acquired Dropcam for $550 million and Nest for $3.2 billion. Amazon Acquired Ring for $1.2 billion.

RYSE is seeking investors to fuel the next phase of growth. Contracts with big box retailers and agreements in place with large commercial real estate developers, landlords, hotels and offices.

Apple Throws Its Hat In The Smart Home Ring

Challenging Amazon, Google

In a recent shakeup in the smart home industry, Apple announced that it will be releasing a new slate of products that are set to release in 2024. As the world’s most valuable company with a huge ecosystem of existing products, Apple is one of the few companies in the world that can pose an instant threat to the likes of Amazon and Google. Apple has not yet announced whether it plans to rebrand its early 2000s line of “iHome” products.

As of last year, Amazon reportedly controlled 11.5% of the US smart home device market, beating out Google (8.5%), and Samsung (5.8%). As one of the largest producers of phones, computers, tablets, and wearables, Apple could instantly make an impact in the market.

What’s in Development

As mentioned, Apple won’t be releasing anything in the smart home space for at least a year. That said, it has plans to eventually release a speedier AppleTV set-top box, a smart display tablet, and a new HomePod speaker.

In particular, Apple’s smart display tablet will be a direct competitor to Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub. This tablet will be able to control your home’s temperature and lights as well as answer FaceTime calls. You can think of it like an iPad that powers your home and can be mounted on your hallway wall.

On top of that, Apple is also rolling out a HomePod speaker, which will retail for $299 and have features like temperature and humidity sensors that can alert you of smoke or carbon monoxide in your home.

Although Apple has not directly commented on it yet, you can bet that Apple’s Siri will eventually play a role in helping you run your smart home.

Matter-Friendly

The good news for Amazon and Google is that Apple has redesigned its Home app to support the smart home protocol, Matter. This means that Apple’s smart home products will be compatible with products from Amazon, Google, or other companies.

For Amazon and Google, adhering to Matter is a sign that Apple won’t attempt to build its own proprietary ecosystem of products so that it can alienate other companies. This is something that Apple has been known for in the past (Looking at you, App store).

And, for consumers, Apple’s compliance simply means that if you end up buying an Apple smart device then you can rest assured that it will work with your Amazon and Google products – in other words, you won’t need to have two sets of chargers laying around like you do for iPhone and Android cell phones.

There's One Big Opportunity Left in Home Automation 🏡

When you think of home automation, all the great investment opportunities have been taken, right?

You've got Nest, the smart thermostat, that Google bought for $3.2 billion, Ring, the smart doorbell, that Amazon bought for $1.2 billion, and August Lock that Assa Abloy acquired.

But there's one area of automation that hasn't gone mainstream yet. And this company is about to do just that.

  • This one tech company has returned investors 40% year-over-year, even in this market downturn

  • And early investors have already seen a 10X return since 2015

  • This company has incredibly strong patents in the smart home space, patents capable of removing copycat sellers from Amazon

  • This startup has already generated over $5 million in online sales only, and is now at an inflection point, about to scale aggressively into retail and B2B real estate developers.

  • This company has the potential to be the next Ring or Nest, yielding major gains for early investors.
