The Missing Piece in the Smart Home

From Lock Screen to Smart Screen

Apple’s iOS 17 software was originally expected to just include minor bug fixes and software updates. But, it was recently announced that the world’s largest company will actually be announcing a flurry of new product updates.

Most notably, many insiders expect Apple to release a new feature that will turn your iPhone into a smart home when it’s locked and placed on its side. When it’s in this mode, your iPhone will be able to display information like calendar appointments, weather, or text/call notifications.

In this sense, your new iPhone will be able to operate more like smart home products such as Amazon’s Echo Show or Google’s Nest Hub. This feature is part of Apple’s goal to make the iPhone more useful, even when it’s not being used.

Other Upgrades

In addition to more lock screen functionality, iOS 17 will also feature a host of other upgrades.

Apple reportedly plans to make mental health a bigger focus with the introduction of a journaling app and emotion-tracking software. The journaling app will be designed in a way that makes it easy for users to keep a running tab of their thoughts or feelings throughout the day. It’s also rumored that this app will be able to suggest topics to write about and alert you if your friends are close by. On top of that, Apple has plans to upgrade its health app to include tools for helping users keep track of their emotions.

Speaking of protecting your mental health, Apple is answering many users’ prayers by making AirPlay easier to use. AirPlay is Apple’s functionality that allows users to stream or share content across devices. With this update, Apple plans to make it easier for users to share videos across devices that they don’t own. For example, this new update will theoretically make it easier to stream your iPhone’s Netflix app to a hotel TV.

Aside from that, Apple also plans on upgrading the wallet app, Find My iPhone, and CarPlay. However, it isn’t quite clear what these upgrades might be.

Looking Ahead

For now, most of these updates are still mainly just speculation. However, Apple fanatics can expect to get more clarification at the June 5th unveiling of iOS 17. Additionally, for now, these product updates will only apply to iPhones. Apple plans to make them available to iPads at some point, but it usually takes longer to integrate updates to iPads than iPhones.

Additionally, there are still hints that iOS 17 will be compatible with Apple’s long-awaited AR/VR headset. However, Apple’s VR headset has been in concept mode for so long that it’s starting to feel like Tesla’s Cybertruck.

Finally, with the widespread implementation of the Matter protocol, smart home fans everywhere are likely speculating if the iPhone’s newest lock screen update is a step towards making it compatible with voice assistants. While this would certainly be game-changing, we also don’t want to speculate too much. For now, let’s just wait for June 5th to see what Apple’s got to announce.
