đŸ€” Wait, Siri Does What Now?

Plus, a start-up looking to unite the American family once again

VoiceBrew is the #1 newsletter for Alexa and Google Assistant enthusiasts

đŸ€– Good afternoon and Happy Thursday. Apple’s Siri will now be able to handle multiple queries at once and you’ll also be able to wake her up with just one word. More on that below.

Loop, an innovative startup, is revolutionizing one of the most fundamental aspects of our daily lives: the ubiquitous household photograph. With the same disruptive impact that photography had on traditional painting, Loop is propelling photo albums and pictures into the digital era.

Understandably, the startup has seen significant traction in its goal to “Unite the American Family Once Again.” With over 35,000 users and $2 million in lifetime sales, the startup continues to see respectable growth.

Major Siri Updates From WWDC

Siri’s Learning How to Multitask

Apple recently hosted its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), which is its annual event to showcase its latest and greatest gadgets as well as offer software updates to existing tech. For anyone that missed the event, one of the biggest updates coming to Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, is that she will now be able to handle two requests at once.

For example, let’s say that you’re getting ready for a movie night. You’ll now be able to tell Siri to dim the lights while also setting a 10-minute timer so that you’ll know when your snacks are ready. This way, you don’t have to waste time breaking your request into multiple sentences.

This update will be a huge time-saver for people that like to set morning alarms for 6:55am, 7:00am, 7:15am, 7:20, and 7:30am.

Other Siri Updates

On top of that, Siri is also maturing and no longer wants to go by her childhood nickname. In other words, you don’t need to call her “Hey Siri” every time you need her to do something for you. From now on, just saying “Hey” is enough to wake the smart assistant.

Who knows? By the next WWDW, Apple might start offering custom wake words so that you can just shout “Yo!” every time you want Siri to start listening.

Notably, these two software updates (multitasking and one-word wakeups) will bring Siri up-to-date with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant which both already offer this functionality.

Another smart home update that Apple unveiled at WWDC is a more comprehensive update to its “activity history.” Apple smart home users will now be able to view a complete history of the requests that Siri completes. For example, you’ll be able to see things like when your garage doors were opened, alarms were set off, or locks were unlocked. This is a great security feature and will be perfect for parents with sneaky kids.

That said, this new feature is something that most other voice assistants have already offered.

The remaining updates for Apple were all purely UI-related, with fairly small updates such as improving the color picker for lights and customizing the Home widget.

Moving Forward With Matter

Notably, all of Apple’s newest updates from this year's WWDC will be compatible with Matter. This will likely continue to be a trend moving forward.

As a reminder, Matter is an open-source protocol adopted by essentially every major tech company to ensure that all smart home products will be compatible with each other. With Matter, you hypothetically won’t have to worry about whether your Google Assistant will be able to play nicely with your Amazon-powered Ring doorbell. This protocol is an attempt to avoid “The Charger Debacle” of the past two decades, where frustrated consumers were forced to buy a different charger for each new cell phone they bought.

Matter means that you will be able to pick your favorite smart home products a la carte and won’t need to worry about committing to one company’s product ecosystem.
