NFL Know It All

Almost everyone knows that one sports buff who just lives and breathes football, basketball, or baseball. You know…the person who can not only name every player on the roster but can also tell you their height, shoe size, and favorite flavor of Gatorade? 

Well, unfortunately, that person is going to have to take a seat as there’s a new sports know-it-all in town: Amazon’s Alexa.

After acquiring the rights to Thursday Night Football’s NFL games for $1 billion annually, Amazon is pushing Alexa to become the go-to source for sports info. This includes things like in-game updates and real time stats so that avid fans don’t need to look up from the game for even one second.

This investment into sports is already proving to be valuable for Alexa users. In 2022, the number of sports queries she received spiked 40%. Amazon doesn’t break out the exact number, but it’s somewhere in the ballpark of hundreds of millions of queries for the year.

What Can She Do?

To start, Alexa can help you answer just about any question you have when it comes to the current game, statistics, or players. This includes both in-game stats like “Alexa, how many total yards does Tyreek Hill have” as well as more general questions like “Alexa, what college did Tom Brady go to?” It even includes football questions that aren’t even football questions like “Wait, Alexa, is Rihanna pregnant?”

For people who aren’t the biggest sports fans, you could even have Alexa quickly explain the rules of the game to you while your significant other is out of the room.

Alexa will also let you set up a feature called “Follow Updates”. This will have Alexa proactively let you know when there is a new score update or other breaking news related to your favorite team.

Alexa’s Advantage

It’s easy to take it for granted, but Alexa’s technology has already come a very long way. To start, she’s able to detect queries in a crowded room and filter out anyone who’s yelling at the refs, the other team, or their own players.

From there, she can instantly scour through massive amounts of data to provide you with the exact stat or answer that you’re looking for. Additionally, as Amazon’s league partnerships continue to grow and mature, you can expect her knowledge of sports to follow suit.

At this rate, they might as well announce that Alexa is going to be the main commentator for the next Super Bowl.
